The winner of two round trip tickets to Israel at this year’s NCSY Annual Basketball Tournament was New York NCSY Advisor Rachel Golian. Rachel is a long time Advisor, and former President of the Roslyn high school Jewish Student Union. Aside from her tremendous dedication to NCSY, Rachel bought raffle tickets this year in order to help raise money for her cousin to attend NCSY’s flagship summer program, The Jerusalem Journey. Rachel continues to be an inspiration to us all, and we congratulate her on her big win.

Hanna Schlager

On Sunday, May 6th, hundreds of parents from Queens, Long Island, and Brooklyn attended a community-wide parenting workshop sponsored by New York NCSY and the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst. Spearheaded by Rena Kwestel and a committee of Long Island parents, and coordinated by Carol Rhine, COO of New York NCSY, the event was geared towards individuals looking for practical solutions to guiding 21st century teens through today’s greatest religious and secular challenges.

In addition to the keynote address from Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President Emeritus of the Orthodox Union, several workshops were given by leading personalities in the Jewish community including Rabbi Naftali Besser; Rabbi Dovid Goldwasser; Dr. Rona Novick; Slovie Jungreis Wolff; and Rabbi Aryeh Lightstone, Director of New York NCSY. These sessions addressed a variety of issues such as how to empower teenage girls, how to communicate with teens so they will listen, strategies to combat teen apathy towards religion, and finding out what teens really say to G-d. Realistic actions that schools, synagogues, camps, and most importantly parents, can take to reconnect and re-inspire their teens were also discussed.

Aside from covering their session topics, each speaker stressed that the key to successful parenting and child rearing starts with the parent being able to turn inwards and better his or her self. By building mutually supportive partnerships between children and parents, families will be able to connect not only with each other, but will also be able to positively influence the community around them and live lives of greater meaning and purpose.

Nina Meyer, an attendee and resident of Long Island reflected on the event, “…Rabbi Weinreb’s session on the idea that spirituality and a love for Shabbos need to start at home, really were my big take-home messages,” she said. “We are our children’s first teachers and role models, and it begins with us to show them…the importance of not seeing Shabbos as a burden. Before we are able to help change our children’s attitudes, we need to adjust our own.”

NY NCSY hopes to host more community-wide events and workshops in the near future for both parents and teens. For more information please contact NCSY at 516-569-6279 or email rhinec@ncsy.org.

SIXTH ANNUAL NY NCSY COMMUNITY-WIDE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN THE FIVE TOWNS, PROVES SUCCESSFUL YET AGAIN

On Sunday, April 29th, close to 1,000 basketball fans and supporters of NCSY gathered at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst to watch the competitive 6th Annual NCSY Basketball Tournament. Both 5 on 5 and 3 on 3 games were held during the day at gyms throughout the Five Towns. In the afternoon, Yitzy Haber provided entertainment for children, including face painting, magic shows, and arts and crafts stations. A lunch catered by Shula’s Pizza and a BBQ dinner catered by Season’s provided refreshments for fans and players throughout the day. Each year, the tournament proves to be highly competitive, featuring many current and former yeshiva league all-stars, as well as a number of current and former players from Yeshiva University. In addition to the high volume of team, court, and event sponsors that supported the tournament this year, El Al generously donated a raffle prize for the tournament; Rachel Golian, a former NCSY’er and NCSY advisor won 2 roundtrip El Al tickets to Israel. For more information about sponsorship opportunities or to play in next year’s tournament, please contact rhinec@ncsy.org.
